About Me
My Railway Career:
I started as a cleaner at Annesley Motive Power Depot (16D / 16B) on 11th January 1960. I was passed for firing on my 16th birthday 10th Dec. I fired on numerous classes of LMR, ER and BR locomotives, from ex-Great Northern J6 0-6-0 and J50 0-6-0 tanks, ex-North Eastern Raven B16 4-6-0's, to"Jubilees", "Scots" Gresley V2's and 9F's, in fact everything that appeared on the ex-Great Central line in the 1960's!...(check out my collection - "engines I have driven & fired")... I progressed through the links as far as No.4 link (Mexborough, Pyewipe (Lincoln) Grimsby, Woodford) Then they closed our depot. The only diesels we had were 3 diesel shunters. D3858/60/61.
I then transferred to......Toton (18A). "fired" on 24's, 25's 44's, 45's 46's and 47's to Wellingborough, Birmingham, York, Northampton, etc etc. To relieve the monotony, I would go and operate the Stones steam heating boiler, but nothing compares to the thrill of a steam engine. I left the railway in September 1966.

    7 46112 "Sherwood Forester" was in a collision at Woodhouse Jct. on 10th March 1964 with driver Arthur Wilcox and fireman Alan Newbury on the footplate.     16 46251 "City of Nottingham" and 9F 2-10-0 92094 at Annesley MPD 8th May 1964. The "Duchess" only had four months to go, however. She was withdrawn from Crewe (5A) in September of the same year. 92094 was luckier, lasting until May 1968 before being withdrawn from Speke Junction (8C)  Annesley Motive Power Depot  (1856)

    25 "Rebuilt Patriot" 4-6-0 No.45535 Sir Herbert Walker K.C.B. forlornly stands withdrawn from service. 5th June 1964. She had been withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor (12A) in November 1963, arrived at Annesley on January 29th 1964, and was awaiting the call to Rigley's Wagon Works, where she was cut up in September of that year.  Annesley Motive Power Depot  (1657)

    45 "Royal Scot" 46163 "Civil Service Rifleman" was the first "Scot" I fired, on the 06.20 all stations Nottingham Victoria - Marylebone.     24th June 1962 sees "K3" 2-6-0 no.61857 on the shed front at Annesley. A long-time Scottish region engine, she was now shedded at Hull Dairycoates (50B). She was withdrawn six months later and cut up at Doncaster Plant in February 1963. Alongside is Willesden (1A) allocated "Black Five" no.45305 now fortunately preserved. Surely Annesley was one of the few places you could see Hull & Willesden engines side by side!
